Are You Committed to Comfort or Growth

I’ve been in this personal development world for a while, and lately, I’ve been noticing that the thing I have the most resistance to is the thing I’ve needed to do all along. The funny thing is, I think I’ve always done this. For example, when I was around 10 years old, my cousin asked me if I wanted to watch the movie, Newsies. My answer: immediately no. I didn’t know what it was or literally anything about it, but I said no. She put it on anyway, and to this day, it is one of my favorite movies!
This is still happening in my life. It’s become an inside joke with my friend and my boyfriend that I have to turn down their suggestion a few times, hear the same suggestion from someone else and then tell them about this new, amazing idea I just heard. Progressive Insurance has even picked up on this and has a perfect example of what I do on their “TV Dad” commercials.
I’ve been told for years that I should be putting to-do list tasks on my calendar, like appointments, and I never wanted to do it. I thought it was a stupid idea. I know what I need to do, and so I’ll just do it, right?
This week, I decided to give it a try. My to-do list was cluttering my brain, and I wasn’t sure I would have time to get it all done. So, I put each of the items on my calendar like an appointment. Customer calls, 1 hour, 10 AM. Blog writing, 1 hour, 11 AM, etc. By the time I finished writing all of the items on my to-do list, I had four extra hours of my day that I didn’t know I had!
This week has been the most productive week I’ve had in I can’t remember how long. I’ve gotten my to-do list done every day, and I’ve had extra free time after everything is done because I wasn’t dragging out each task to fit in the time I had for the day!
I find myself curious. Where does this resistance come from? It’s kind of annoying but also kind of cool. I now know that the thing I am resisting is the thing I need to do. But again, where is the resistance coming from?
Think of your head and heart being two separate entities. Your heart is connected to the things you want the most. Your head is committed to keeping you safe. Since most of the things that we want are outside of our comfort zone, your head is trying to protect you from the things it thinks are dangerous. Therefore, there’s conflict.
So, what do you do? That depends. Are you more committed to the things you want? Or are you committed to your comfort? Ultimately the choice is yours. For most of my life, I was committed to being comfortable. In fact, I once told a mentor of mine that I didn’t want to pursue any of my goals because goals come with obstacles to help you grow, and I felt overwhelmed by the obstacles I was going through at that time.
Since then, I’ve embraced the obstacles because my dream is more important to me than my comfort. When I feel resistant to something, that’s the thing I choose to do. I still struggle with it some. For a year, I’ve been hearing I need to be doing videos, and for a year, I’ve resisted. I feel like I’m not ready for it, but as my life coach says, “Do it scared. Do it unprepared. Do it again.”
It’s an amazing motto to live by. And I highly recommend it.
You may never stop being afraid of taking the action you need to achieve your goals. Do it scared. You may never feel prepared. Do it anyway. Success can’t come after taking an action one time. Do it again.
